Whats the Difference Between Reality and Imagination (philosophy)

Imagination is something some writers use to explain the difficulties of life. Life gets complicated at times. We often find our selves lost when we see something real. Sometimes what we need is an imaginary approach to explain something we feel deep within our selves. We need to explain something that society pretends does not exist. We are all looking for something, but most of us have a hard time seeing it because we lack the right use of words or the right experience. Romantic writers try to help us determine what we really want to see from what is shown to us. They try to tell us that what we want goes beyond what others want. We want to jump and reach for clouds but lack the words to do so. We lack the imagination to believe that we can move from point A to point B. Romantic writers will to try to help some of us lost souls see the big picture of life. Romantic writers use image words from mythology and religion to teach us something that we cannot easily see.
Romantic writer Edgar Poe, often wrote about religious images to bring hard concepts into focus. In the “Lenore” poem, Poe talks about religion in way that most people seem to forget when they leave church. Poe writes (n.d), “Should catch the note, as it doth float up from the damned earth (p.2).” Edgar Poe is trying to tell us that God wants man to accept that the earth is damned (Poe, n.d, p.2). It will forever be damned and there is no point in trying to worship it. The note in the poem represents the bible. The bible tells man how to enter heaven. The note’s floating image represents a period of time that someone has before the note disappears (Poe, n.d, p.2). The note will disappear at the end of someone’s life. So, someone has a certain amount of time to learn what is wanted or needed in order to reach a higher level in life. Poe often talked in a religion sense, but one would think he talked in a general sense as well. This image also suggest that a person must learn in order to move to a higher state in life. Not just in money, but also in wisdom and logic. Edgar was trying to tell the reader that knowledge does matter in order to move forward. However, you need different types of knowledge to move forward. Romantics like Edgar Poe would often try to remind people of what is needed to move forward with religious images.
John Keaton, another romantic writer, often wrote in mythological ways to tell the reader something about sight. Keaton writes (2011), “Search, Thea, search, tell me if thou seest, the man, A certain shape or shadow, making way (p.287).” Keaton shows imagery by telling the reader to search. He wants the reader to search for signs of progress (Terada, 2011, p.287). Keaton believes that knowledge comes from trying to see something. He mentions a shadow in his poem to infer that images that one may see at first may not be 100% visible. The image you seek in life will become visible once you keep looking for it. You may have to stick to something that appears to work until you see the entire process come together. Keaton also mentions the word “making way” to remind the reader to look for a way that make things possible (Terada, 2011, p.287). Keaton uses the mythology concept of eyes to remind the reader that what you see is what you know. Keaton believes that the eyes are designed to figure out how to move from one point in space to another in any spot of the universe (Terada, 2011, p.287). The universe represents a plain that you exists in to another plain that you don’t see yet. Keaton is trying to tell readers that everything in life can not be explained through seeing things very clearly all the time (Terada, 2011, p.287). Keaton tries to teach people through mythology that everything in life cannot be explained with a “hammer.” Life is more complicated and more interesting than just building things and showing them off.
The Romantic writer Lord Byron often use imagination from Christian religion to remind people of death. Byron writes (2006), “Of almost everybody born to die (p.337).” Byron is inferring that everybody is born is going to die one day. He says “Born to die” to indicate the purpose of one’s life. You are going to die, so you better find something worth tasting before you die. No matter what you choose to do in life, you will still die. There is nothing that will stop you from leaving this world. Byron also writes (2006), “And if they die, why disturb the sweet and sound sleep that knows no waking (p.338)?” Byron is trying to show us from the Adam and Eve story that life feels better when you don’t know the things that hurt you. Some of us want to know everything and want to be smart. But, Byron teaches us that being smart has its consequences. The more you learn the more you realize you was happier with less knowledge. There are things in this world that you do not need to know. Some apples in life you should never eat no matter what anybody tell you. Money for example does not solve all your problems. Some people might tell you that money will solve all your problems, but you must choose not to listen to this. Money solves your bills, but it doesn’t solve what you want to do with your life. Lord Byron was a Romantic writer that wrote to remind people to enjoy life. Life is not something that is about making it to the end. Life is about enjoying life before it ends.
Romantic writers will often use imagination and religion to explain concepts to people in way that is easy to understand. The simple way is always the best way to explain difficult concepts. People need things to be broken down in life with imagination to feel better about life. You might die and the world might be going to destruction, but that is not what you think about in life because you are free to live. The idea of Romantics is to see the big pictures of life. Do not focus on the things you hate in life. Focus on the things you like life in life. The beliefs you want to agree with. The world is not going to change tomorrow or maybe ever. So, don’t think about this world. Think about your dreams. Your dreams represent you and the world view represents everybody but you. Romantics try to use imagination and religion to show us that you have focus on what you individually want from life. What you individually want is what matters in life. Things change in the world all the time, but what you want before you die will always be there. You need to learn different things in order to reach a higher level of who you are. Learn to move and find peace in your life.

The Things We Hide (philosophy)

“Cathedral” by Raymond Carver is a story about humans hiding things they want to do from each other. We all hide things from others even we do not want to admit it. Raymond wrote a story that show forms of deconstruction. Deconstruction, is the use of words to mean something that goes beyond what is written. Phrases that show pictures that do not need words to explain. Deconstruction in “Cathedral” show something that we hide personally. Carver’s “Cathedral” show signs of Deconstruction from ideas of characters who say things in private.
Raymond’s “Cathedral” reminds us that we like to hide sexual things we really want (Nesset, 1994, p.116). Raymond writes, “It’s a lot of work between us when we could meet up at some hotel like I been telling you (Weise, 2014, p.125).” A married woman is speaking to a blind man about sexual interest. She has known this blind man since child hood and has a deep sexual interest in him. She hides this from her husband because she wants to be safe. Her husband makes her feel safe because he has a stable job. The blind man is on disability and might not be able to take care of her financial needs. Disabled people receive a check from the government, but the check is only enough to get by. The check is not enough to satisfy a woman’s financial need. The woman in the story wanted to be with someone who was financially successful also. So, she decided to marry into money to fulfill her fiances and hide her sexual needs away.
Why does Raymond suggest that we all hide our sexual wants? Money might be the answer to hiding sexual desires. Money plays a big role in why people get married. People would like to get married for love, but love does not pay the bills. It is hard to think about love when your finances are not in order. Love is said to be the driving force behind any decision that seems impossible. However, money has a way of reminding people that it matters more then being happy. Majority of parents living on earth, want their daughters to marry for money. Money pays the bills. Money puts a roof over your head. Money puts food in your stomach. It is simple to see why people choose money over love.
However, Raymond’s “Cathedral” also infers that humans have sexual desires that go beyond money. The wife in “Cathedral” was financial successful. But, it was not enough to satisfy what she really wants. She really wanted a certain sexual flare that she could only get from the blind man in “Cathedral.” What does this say about humans? We want sexual things in the world to feel complete. We do not want to look complete. Looking complete and being financial successful does not give one the power to “do what they want.” Sometimes success is something that looks good and can not be shifted. Raymond believes that we do not want to look good. We want to feel good. This “feeling good” is the deconstruction that Raymond uses when he speaks with the character’s thoughts on lines.
Feeling good might be what is all about. We all want to feel good in the end right? We all want to feel like we are happy. Being happy is not something that is based on looks. Looking good only matters when the person we love is concerned about it. The person also has to be a “lover.” A lover is more connected to a person’s feelings then a finale friend who can pay the bills. There are some things money can not buy and one of them is feeling happy. Money tends to take things from you that you are never going to get back. Things you can’t ignore and pretend like they do not exist.
A writer named “Nesset” would add that “Cathedral” has a deconstruction meaning that is aligned with people sticking to a safe place. Nesset believes that people behave similar to the people in “Cathedral.” They want to stay in their own little safe place (Nesset, 1994, p.116). It makes sense if you put a little thought into it. People want to feel safe at all times, so they do things to feel safe. They keep their job to feel they are financially stable. They do what they are told so they do not upset people. They follow the crowd so they do not get humiliated. They choose a safe career so they will have a job lined up. They try to do things to please their parents. We all fall victim to this “safe space.” It is very hard to break out of it. We all want people to like us for who we are, but we really can not afford to take risks. Risks, are things that can kill us or cause people to hate us. Nobody wants to be hated because it is easier to get though life without dealing with enemies or danger.
Raymond suggest that the reason we avoid danger is because it is hard. Raymond is right in some regard. It is hard to move up in the world. It is hard to motivate yourself to do something you need to do. It is hard to wake up in the morning and tell your self that you need to go to work. It is hard to motivate your self to do something you really care about for no financial gain. We humans tend to not do something that is hard because doing hard stuff stresses us out. Doing hard stuff makes us feel like we have no purpose life. Doing stuff that is hard rips us from something we hold dear to ourselves. Doing something that is hard forces us to change into something that we do not want to be. Doing hard stuff makes humans complain about the things they hate. Doing something that is easy on the other hand makes humans feel that we are enjoying life. But, maybe that is the less stressful lie that we keep telling ourselves. We tell ourselves that the easy way is the best way. But, is that really the the truth? Maybe the easy way is the way of nothingness and maybe nothing is what makes us feel incomplete. Raymond was on to something big when he wrote lines to tell thoughts of characters in private.
The public eye is something that Raymond believes we are afraid of. We are filled with fear to watch the public eye. Raymond wrote, “I don’t like to put myself out there. I’d no more like to put myself out there (Weise, 2014, p.128).” The wife is speaking to the blind man. She tells him that being open in the world is like getting hit by a bus (Weise, 2014, p.128). Raymond is right in some regard. When you be your self, it can sometimes feel like your being hit by a bus. You can get hit so hard to the point where you don’t want to get hit anymore. Sometimes when you get made fun of, it reminds you to never do that thing that you did to be original ever again. It hurts to be original. It hurts to try something new because the eye is always watching and sometimes the eye feels like a bus. It hurts being judged. Sometimes it hurts so much to the point where we become filled with fear of the public eye that watches us when we walk outside. Raymond’s “Cathedral” show a deconstruction meaning that the watching eye of judgment haunts all of us.
Being judged is something nobody wants to deal with. Being judged has its consequences. It means that people will not respect you. It means that it will make you feel stupid sometimes. It means that it will It is hard to turn against the public. The public has a way of controlling everything that you do. The public tends to mock you when you do something your not suppose to do. Most people do not fight the judgments because they don’t want to feel the pain of being judged. They stay in their safe zones and pretend like they like the majority rule. It is easier to pretend then it is be something. Being something requires a whole lot of hard work that most people are not willing to commit. Being something also means that you have to make sacrifices that go beyond what you want to keep.
Raymond’s “Cathedral” also suggest through the characters that most people are not willing to make sacrifices. The wife in the story was not willing to leave her financial stability to be with the person she love. Why? Sacrifice is something according to Raymond that people are not willing to make because it cost too much. If the wife sacrificed her husband, she would lose her house and her family respect. Her husband and her house is a big sacrifice to be with the person you love. She would have gave up too much to be successful. That is why people do not like to make sacrifices. A sacrifice can change someone’s life, but it comes at a great price. Most do not want to make the sacrifice because a person has to sacrifice something that is very important at times to achieve the desired result. The wife in the story did not want to sacrifice the stable lifestyle to live the life of her dreams. She wanted to be with her lover, but she also wanted to be in a “safe place.”
In my personal opinion, we retreat to the safe place because we are hiding something about our selves. We feel it almost every day. That we want to be something that makes us happy, but we consider the world too much. It is easy to retreat to a safe structure where people like you because you do what everybody else does. However, doing easy things has a way of making you feel like your life has no purpose. Hardship gives us purpose and meaning. Hardship teaches us how to deal with enemies and situations. There will be times in life when buildings will fall a part. They will be times in life when people turn against you. The only way to prepare your self for that day is make the tough decisions. Life will not always be what people say it will be. It changes fast and without warning. The world will also change with it. The safe place will become something in a different direction that makes you think that “you should have did this.” The safe place is a false reality that we keep telling ourselves to make life seem like its under control.
Raymond’s “Cathedral” also shows us the deconstruction of a alcoholic. Why does someone become an alcoholic. If you look into the story of the “Cathedral,” you will realize that the story talks about a husband who complains about his wife leaving him. The husband is also drunk when he speaks. Raymond writes, “What is it about her?” and “What do you like about her?” The husband say this in a drunk tone because he is admitting that his wife is cheating on him. He is also admitting that he is a failure with his wife. The fact that his wife wants to be with another man shows that he failed as a loving husband. The story gives us an idea of why people drink alcohol. Most of the time, people drink to forget about the failures they have made in life. Failure is something that you can not just wipe under the rug. Failure is something that stays with you day after day. It haunts your mind and won’t leave you alone. Raymond believes that being an alcoholic is connected to failure. It would be true to people who drink to escape instead of drinking to have fun.
Failure is a deep conceited notion that Raymond mentions all throughout his story. He mentions the story in the beginning when the wife talks about being bored with her husband. He mentions it in the middle when the wife talks about having sex with another man. He mentions it in the end when the husband talks about the wife leaving him while drinking alcohol. Raymond mentions failure a lot in this story to infer that being a failure does not always mean that you failed at material objects. It can also mean that you failed at making life choices that you could have made right.
Failure, is something that people hide from each other. People do not want to looked a upon as a failure. They always try to come up with the best stories and the best explanations for things. Most people do not want to admit their failures because it shows weakness which is shown to everybody else. Everybody wants to look like the hero, but nobody wants to do the hero training. In other words, failure is something you have to face or you can keep pretending like its going to go away one day. In reality, that is not going to happen. You must figure out a way to overcome failure or you will end up just like the people in the “Cathedral.” People who are filled with failure because they did not want to face failure. Pretending like it will go away when the reality is that it will not go away until something is done about it. This decontruction of failure is what Raymond was trying to teach us in his work.

The “Cathedral” story also show us that when we are not honest, we become intoxicated with regret. People go through life not being honest with themselves. People do things they do not want to do to have things. Things are something you want but not need. People sometimes spend their whole life chasing something only to realize that they did not want it in the first place. The deconstruction in regret is that we all experience moments where we regret not doing something that “could of” worked. The blind man in the “Cathedral” story could of slept with the wife which would of made him feel complete. Its not like he is getting action anyway. He is a blind man and instead making the best of his choices he gets caught up into making the worst choices to please people that do not care for him in the first place. It doesn’t take a blind man to realize that the world does not care for you unless you have a use. The man “could of” made his life more interesting but he wanted to please everybody. His life then became one filled with women he could have had sex with but chose not to. His life became one where he could have tried interesting things and took some risks but decided not to. So, he ended up becoming filled with regret which is something we will all face when we decide to not act on what we really want.
Raymond’s “Cathedral” shows us that playing safe all the time has its consequences. You never experience life when you play it safe. You never experience what its like to pursue  your dreams when you play it safe. You never experience what it is like to love when you play it safe. You never have a “real” conversation when you play it safe. You never hang around interesting people when you play it safe. The wife in Raymond’s “Cathedral” played it safe her whole life which is why she never been around people who do interesting things. Playing it safe is good for stability in a world that stays the same. Not playing it safe it gives you options to do what you want to do. That is why playing it safe is not a good idea. The world changes and you realize that you should of did more then played it safe. You should have did something with your life. It hurts when you see people you went to high school with do something that you could have did.
Raymond’s “Cathedral” shows us a story this more then about a wife cheating on her boring husband. It about people realizing that they missed out on an opportunity that could change their life or make them feel successful. In life, we do get caught up in the meaning behind the words. We do not look for our own meaning in life. Most of us just cling on to whatever the majority is doing. This belief changes over time and that is the essence that Raymond is trying to teach people. Life is not what it looks like on T.V. You have to make your own life to understand what life truly is. But, you got to find it for your self. Otherwise, you will be like most people looking for something that looks good so they can “pretend” to be happy. Each of the characters in the “Cathedral” was pretending to be happy. The wife married for money instead of love. The Husband worked too much instead of spending time with his wife. The blind man passed his opportunity for sex because he felt his disability was something that did not deserve any sexual obtainment. The husband also drank a lot when he realize that his wife wanted to have sex with another man because he worked too much. Each person is chasing a false sense of happiness. A sense of happiness that is based on having material things instead of having things that matter in life. That is what Raymond was trying to teach us in one of his works. The world is not something you join to fit in. You join it to find your way down the rabbit hole and hope it completes who you are. That is the overall goal in life is to be complete before the day you die in order to find something that you can call your life was worth living. It is not worth living pretending to be happy and never taking a step into something you want to do so you will have everybody like you. Choose your life or run away from it. The choice is yours.

Why Do Humans Feel Sex, Doubt, God's Dead, and Nothing Really Matters (philosophy)

The feeling in each of us mean something that most of us don’t understand. During the 17th century, a writer named Milton wrote a book called Paradise Lost which discussed the feeling or condition that humans have deep within them (Austin, 2016, p.28). Humans spend half their time working and forget the feelings they experience day to day. They experience these feelings for a reason and Milton might have an answer as to why humans feel the way they feel (Austin, 2016, p.28). Milton believed that humans have a condition that was given to them by some creator (deGruy, 2012, p.118). The condition is very complex because it consists of things that large social societies do not teach. It consists of things that television does not show you. It consists of elements that humans feel in their bodies and minds that are sometimes abnormal. Paradise Lost discusses the human condition in way that can be explained to anyone that wants to know “why you feel certain things.” Events taken place in Paradise Lost by Milton reflects 17th century British society teaches humans that we have a systems deep within us that is filled with doubt, sexual needs, and death.
Doubt, doubt is something every human experience in life. The Devil experienced doubt in Milton’s Paradise Lost (Austin, 2016, p.28). In the book, the Devil was talking to himself with words of doubt (Austin, 2016, p.28). The devil wanted to be free but being free made him question what he was doing (Austin, 2016, p.28). The Devil use to work for God (Austin, 2016, p.28). He would follow God’s commands at all times (Austin, 2016, p.28). One day, the Devil didn’t want to do what he was told anymore (Austin, 2016, p.28). He wanted to be God and that caused God to push him back down to hell (Austin, 2016, p.28). Then, the Devil started to feel doubts in himself (Austin, 2016, p.28). He felt his actions might have caused him to be punished (Austin, 2016, p.28). The devil said (2016), “Vows made in pain, as violent and void. For never can true concealment grow Where wounds of deadly hate have perceived so deep (p.28).” The Devil wanted freedom but look at the price of real freedom. Milton believed that the Devil’s doubt about his own actions is similar to humans doubting their own actions (Austin, 2016, p.28).
When humans are punished for committing certain actions, humans are filled with a system of doubt in their minds (Austin, 2016, p.28). Milton’s story event of the Devil talking to himself show humans that we don’t want to be punished (Austin, 2016, p.28). We don’t want to be punished because we don’t want a lot of people against us (Austin, 2016, p.28). Our punishment will make people mock us or look at us as being undesirable (Austin, 2016, p.28). We don’t want to be put in that situation (Austin, 2016, p.28). Miltion’s view of doubt express the actions humans refuse to take to please the majority of the group (Austin, 2016, p.28). The Devil was alone and being alone filled him up with doubt (Austin, 2016, p.28). We want to be a part of the majority of society, but being a part of the majority of society can prevent us from making certain decisions (Austin, 2016, p.28). The doubt humans feel within themselves comes from not wanting to be an outcast and not wanting to be punished (Austin, 2016, p.28).
In my own personal opinion from Milton’s Paradise Lost, humans have a hard time making decisions in life because life fills us with doubt. We want to do things in this world. But, the world has problem with these things we want to do. Humans are aware of this and when we make a decision against the majority of society we feel so much doubt. So much doubt fills our minds and tries to tell us “no, you shouldn’t.” It goes against the group’s decision. Every time we make a decision that goes against the group decision, this system of doubt enters our minds. Milton saw this in his life. Most people only care more about the group’s decision even if the group’s decision is wrong. Most people do not want to be mocked. It fills us with so much fear that we can’t make our own decisions sometimes. Sometimes, we need to make a decisions and stop caring about the group. Some decisions we make are harmless and the group needs to accept those decisions. We can’t force the group to accept some of the decisions we make, but some decisions are about pursuing something bigger then the group’s purpose for society. Sometimes, you have to think about your own life and not about the life of the group. If you want to make a decision, then you need to make it for your self.
Paradise Lost also mentions God as being imperfect. Which could mean that humans are also imperfect (Raymond, 2002, p.934). God created man in in his own image (Raymond, 2002, p.934). However, Milton believed that if man is sinful then God is also sinful (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Paradise Lost, mentions God causing a great flood to kill his bad children (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Milton is tying to say that God can not be good if he goes against his own rules (Raymond, 2002, p.934). This concept of imperfection could create doubt in any believer of God (Raymond, 2002, p.934). God is suppose to be the creator of man and set a good example for man (Raymond, 2002, p.934). But, God commits bad actions just like his children (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Milton was trying to suggest that maybe man is filled with bad and good (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Maybe man has a hard time accepting the fact they are made of bad and good (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Milton is tying to say that man wants to do bad and good things, but we doubt the bad things we do because it goes against society (Raymond, 2002, p.934). According to Milton’s beliefs, a Christian society is hypocritical is not worth following (Raymond, 2002, p.934).
Milton believes that God is a hypocrite (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Being a hypocrite makes people question what you say. This would also cause people to not believe in what you have to say. I personally believe there is nothing wrong with being a little hypocrite. But, being a big hypocrite does make someone question why they should listen to you (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Milton believes that people secretly doubt God because God is hypocritical (Raymond, 2002, p.934). Unfortunately, most people want to be accepted into the group so they will follow what ever the group decides (Austin, 2016, p.28). Milton is trying to explain to humans that we also have doubts because we do things we don’t believe in to please the majority of the group (Austin, 2016, p.28). When you do something you don’t believe in, you tend to become filled with doubt because you secretly want to disagree with the group’s decision (Austin, 2016, p.28). You secretly want to disagree with a lot of things that the group of one society defines as good or bad (Raymond, 2002, p.934). You experience doubt because deep down you know the group’s decision is wrong (Raymond, 2002, p.934). You have a problem with some decisions in all categories of life (Raymond, 2002, p.934).
Milton mentions the concept of death in way that most people don’t see (Crossley, 2006, p.152). Adam and Eve is mentioned in Paradise Lost as being unaware of the true meaning of death (Crossley, 2006, p.152). When Adam and Eve is told of death, they assume it is something that is timely (Crossley, 2006, p.152). God tells them that they will die after a certain period of time (Crossley, 2006, p.152). However, Adam and Eve fail to realize that death is something that is completely random (Crossley, 2006, p.152). Milton’s view of death represents a system that is connected to chaos (Crossley, 2006, p.152). Chaos is something that is not controlled or timed (Crossley, 2006, p.152). You could die at this very moment because death doesn’t care about your future (Crossley, 2006, p.152). Humans want to pretend that death is something you experience at the end of the road, but we really do not know how long this road is (Crossley, 2006, p.152). Milton is trying to convince us that death is something that happens randomly and it can not be stopped (Crossley, 2006, p.152). We have to learn how to accept what it is in order to enjoy the little time we have left on earth (Crossely, 2006, p.152). Humans have a condition to die and it doesn’t mean it’s at the end of the road (Crossley, 2006, p.152).
In my personal opinion based on Milton’s point of view, we really don’t know when we are going to die. You could tell someone to stop wasting time doing certain things but it won’t change the fact that all of us are going to die. In some ways, living a hard worked life is pointless because you die in the end. If you spend most of your life working, you really not enjoying life. There is so much more to life then having material objects. One day, you have to break away from the material world and spend money on thing you really want. People might mock you but its better to have fun then to pretend to have fun. We all die and it doesn’t matter if you are very successful in the end. You need to sit back and enjoy life while your still living.
The human body also has a system of sexual needs that need to be maintained (deGruy, 2012, p.118). In the eyes of Paradise Lost, humans need sex to keep bodies and mind under control (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Sex makes you feel human (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Without sex, you are wondering through life looking for something that you can not fill (deGruy, 2012, p.118). The angels discussed in paradise lost are beautiful because beauty is connected to the sex (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Humans are designed to have sex with other humans (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Sex fixes the mental and physical damages of the world (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Beautiful Angels from heaven in Paradise Lost represents a repair system to fix a human’s mental and physical problems (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Human sex similar to a car needing an oil change to prevent it from falling a part (deGruy, 2012, p.118). The human body was not designed to not have sex. It needs sex to prevent it from falling a part into pieces (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Milton assumes that your brain has a limit to how much pain it can handle (deGruy, 2012, p.118). Your body needs a refill in order to prevent body and mind from becoming unbalanced (deGruy, 2012, p.118).
Furthermore, Milton’s Paradise Lost predicts that humans have doubts in their speech (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Humans tend to speak to each other in way to not make them look unexpected to the group (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Adam and Eve spoke to each other in a way to not make them look like a fool (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Adam speaks to eve in a way that is calm and understanding (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). The knowledge gained from the apple that Adam bit has turned him into someone that expects to speak with understanding (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). When Eve bit the apple from the garden of Eden, she assumed that she had to be someone that speaks with urgency instead of understanding (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Why do Adam and Eve speak this way? They obtained knowledge and they assume that the knowledge they have obtained is all there is (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Adam and Eve ate the apple and believe knowledge that was given to them because their trying to please the ruler (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). It is similar to humans who act similar to the people on T.V. to please the people in power (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Humans have doubts if they do not speak like the ruler wants them to speak (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). They want to belong to the group and most humans assume you need to copy others to belong to a group (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433).
In addition, Paradise Lost is trying to teach us that people are influenced by what we know (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). People who believe in God will act similar to Adam and Eve because it is what they know (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Likewise, humans who read about farming will know how to talk like a farmer (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Humans want to speak in way where they “know things (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433).” If they speak in a way where they do not know things, they will be filled with doubt (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Milton is trying to teach us that humans do not want to sound stupid when they speak (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Strangely, humans want to be part of a group and they want to know if what they are saying is right (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). They base what they know from the information that have seen (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). If they have not seen the information they speak, they will have doubt in themselves (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Humans do not want to look stupid when talking one another (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). They do not want to look like a failure in the eyes of one another (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Failure causes doubt and humans do not want to look like a failure (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433). Humans will try their hardest in their speeches to sound right even if they are not right because they don’t want to look like a failure (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1433).
In my own opinion based on Paradise Lost, humans might not want to look stupid. However, looking stupid is sometimes necessary to get the desired results. The results are not always going to come by following what every body else is doing. Most people in the world today, give out the wrong information. As a result, a lot of people lose their jobs and end up in trouble. You should never listen to what sounds good. Listen to what feels good. If your not going by what you feel, your going to fall into a lot of scams in life. People say a lot of things but it has nothing to do with results of actions.
Milton also suggest in his work that humans become filled with doubt when they fall (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). When Adam fell from grace by committing a sin, Adam felt great doubt in his mind (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Most humans are designed to get upset when they fall to lower level (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). It could be that they were programmed by God to feel ashamed for being at a lower level (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Humans could also feel doubt after falling because it is the only way they know (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434).
Milton often suggest that humans know what knowledge they are willing to pursue (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). They only speak what they know (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). If a human is not willing to look for new apples to eat, they will only know what one tree has to offer (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). The apples represent knowledge that comes from good or bad energy (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Milton believes that humans who do not know how to think will believe whatever they read (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). The smart humans are the ones that question things (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). The dumb humans are the ones that follow things to be accepted into society (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Milton assumes that humans who don’t seek knowledge will believe anything they see (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). They will follow anything to avoid feeling the doubt inside their minds (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). The doubt separates from group.
Paradise Lost teaches humans that we have lost the paradise that we once had (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Some of us like to pretend that we know what death is but we really do not know (Crossley, 2006, p.152). Humans are completely lost from the garden of Eden (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). We do not think about what information is given to us (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). We have doubts in our minds over things that are not important such as losing and humiliation (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). We focus on pleasing the group even if the group is wrong (Austin, 2016, p.28). Milton is trying to show us that either we are no longer children of God or God never existed in the first place (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Are we hypocrites to what we believe so we can fit in with society? How did we go from survival to pleasing the people in power no matter what happens? Milton is trying to open our eyes to something bigger then what is shown in the book of Genesis (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Milton believes that humans really do not know what their doing anymore because they don’t question if what they are doing is right (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Humans drift from one place to another and never wonder why they should care (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434). Most humans are completely lost because they try so hard to please the group instead of trying hard to please what should be done (Milton's Uncertain Eden, 2008, p.1434).

Why Do Humans Exist (philosophy)

Why do humans exist? The question that lingers in our minds from century to century. The question can not be answered with mere science. Writers from the Romantic era and Victorian era try to answer this question with literature. From the Romantic era to Victorian era, the idea of human existence changes almost completely. Writers would often use images from nature and industrial objects to explain why humans live on earth. The writers from the Romantic era would generally say humans exist to enjoy the view. The writers of the Victorian era would generally say that the existence of humans is to search for power. The truth is for you to decide. Writers from the Romantic and Victorian era try to explain the purpose of human existence with literature images of nature and industrial objects.
The purpose of literature from Romantic to Victorian era changed which impacted the purpose of human existence. The Romantic period was comprised of seeking pleasure and avoiding pain (Kern, 2006, p.327). Writers would focus on enjoying the things you like about life and dealing with the pain in between. One day later, science was adopted as the new standard of thinking and the Victorian era started (Kern, 2006, p.327). Writers started to write with real world thinking instead of imaginary thinking (Kern, 2006, p.327). This caused writers to write in a world view that relates to every day problems. In general, most of the writers adopted the real world thinking policy to avoid looking like someone who didn’t know what they was talking about. Science became the new “God” and everything else was considered “dumb talk.” The world went from a place were humans should find happiness in the mind to a place were humans should find happiness in material objects.
William Wordsworth, a Romantic writer, suggest that the purpose of human existence is to realize that nothing moves faster then you (Saunders, 2012, p.258). According to Wordsworth, we go through life assuming that walking in one direction is moving forward in life. However, we are never moving forward in life with our eyes because our eyes are the only thing that is moving. Wordsworth writes (2012), “…..the train was whizzing north along the trails……” and “And the things I gazed at---with affection I might add---were really the ones that were doing the moving (p.258).” Wordsworth believes that humans spend their whole life trying to change what they see, but they only end up changing what they see with their eyes (Saunders, 2012, p.258). Humans should realize that you are meant to enjoy what you see in front of you. You are not meant to spend your whole life chasing material objects for satisfaction. You should focus on changing your mind and your heart because that is what give you true happiness. Your mind and heart is what makes what you see in front of you enjoyable.
George Gordon once wrote “So We’ll Go No More A Roving” to represent the love of life (Byron, 2007, p.1). Gordon believes that humans need to take time out for love before it runs out (Byron, 2007, p.1). Sometimes, we become so fixed on work that we forget to watch the clock. We could use time for love making or for something we love to do. Time does not always need to be used for work. Gordon writes (2007), “Through the night was for love making, and the day returns too soon (p.1).” Each day has a ending and we are suppose to enjoy what we love before the day ends. Gordon writes “Through the night…..” because every day has a night that was meant for something lovable (Byron, 2007, p.1). Days go by fast and most of us forget to have fun in the night or at all. Gordon wants people to realize that time is always running and you can’t wait for the nice shiny object to show up. You have to say “enough is enough” and go have some type of fun. You don’t need nice things to have fun or to experience love.
A Victorian writer named Rudyard Kipling believe that humans exist to find power. Humans are suppose to go through life looking for more and more resources to feel important. A human’s satisfaction in life depends on how much material stuff he or she obtains. Kipling writes (2007), “To serve as types of progress.” and “All mortals have their share (p.180).”
Kipling believes that the purpose of human existence has changed from enjoying life to gaining resources. All humans have their share of resources depending on how much work they put in. Your happiness in life depends on how hard you work to obtain objects. Every object you obtain will make you happy and make you feel like you have did something in your life.
Wordsworth disagree with Kipling view of human existence by believing that humans should enjoy life because they do not know what is real (Ross, 1992, p.635). Wordsworth assumes that humans do not even know what they see half the time. Are humans looking at a fiction of their own reality or a past memory? Wordsworth writes (1992), “Many times I grasp at a wall or tree to recall myself from this abyss of idealism to reality (p.635).” We are programmed from birth to think that we only live once in this world. We are also programmed from birth to think that what we see with our eyes is the only reality that exist. So, most of us go through life doing what we see others do because we assume that it is normal to do. In Wordsworth eyes, we do not know what we are looking at and why should we try so hard to please the industrial machines that programmed us. Trees do not work hard in life to exist, so why should we? Trees are used in Wordsworth’s literature to explain that maybe humans were not meant to work hard to provide meaning for life (Ross, 1992, p.635).
20th Century Victorian writer Thom Gunn thinks that man was destined to be trapped inside a box (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). Gunn grew up in the 1960’s which was a time period stuck in the industrial era (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). Gunn think most men choose to spend life in a box because that is what society teaches them to do (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). His poem “On the Move” tells multiple meaning which support this belief. Gunn writes (2015), “He wants to withdraw into a small place like the cupboard under the stairs where the vacuum cleaner is kept, so he can wait, and doze, and get in nobody’s way (p.38).” Gunn writes “He wants to withdraw in a small place” to represent the apartment or the house that an average person works for (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). Men in the modern world need money to have a place to stay. Gunn believes that men do not have a purpose much beyond making money to live in a box (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). Gunn also write “Get in nobody’s way” to assume that most men do not want trouble from other men (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). Men secretly know that a house is a safe place. Every time a man walks outside, he is at war with anyone that wants war (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). It’s hard to be at peace when you live in a place where violence and discomfort is allowed. Men do not want violence or discomfort because they assume it will lead to death. Furthermore, Gunn continues to suggest in his poem “On the Move” that men are waiting for death because it is the least painful way to experience death  (Saltmarsh, 2015, p.38). Men do not want to die fast because dying fast means to experience more pain and having less time to enjoy things on earth. Gunn is generally saying that for most men living on earth, the reason they are alive is to wait to die. Waiting to die is the least painful form of death. On the contrary, waiting to die is not going to prevent death from occurring. It might be the least painful, but it won’t stop a man from leaving this planet to another plain of existence.
In my personal opinion, waiting to die might be the majority decision that most men choose for their entire life. But, live does not have to be this way. Yes, modern men of the year 2017 follow the code that Gunn assumes. They get up for work and go home to watch T.V. They repeat the cycle over and over because they have bills to pay. Their motive for following the “circle procedure” is understandable. But, they fail to realize that time is running out. Time is always running out. I do not think a man should devote his life to live inside a box. Sleep in a box and never see what the world has to offer before he stops waking up one day. Would be a tragedy for a man to spend his whole life in a box and never wonder what beautiful things the world has to offer. It would be safe for a man to live for paying bills, but it would also be boring. Bills should be seen as something you pay to keep living.
Victorian writer Evan Boland believe in a concept that is connected to the Romantic writers for the existence of man (Greening, 2008, p.407). Boland believes that man’s purpose in life is to realize that this life is a temporary book (Greening, 2008, p.407). Boland wrote literature that expressed illusion that we make for ourselves. We need material objects to be successful or that we need to make a lot of money to be happy. Boland writes (2008), “I took a book down from a shelf and stopped to read and found myself (p.407).” Boland writes “Stopped to read and found myself” to say in a secret metaphor “Life is a book” and not T.V. show you see on telly (Greening, 2008, p.407). Life is a book that someone will open one day when you die (Greening, 2008, p.407). Boland thinks a man is suppose to write his own story in his own way. The purpose of man is to cut his own path. He is not suppose to do anything he doesn’t want to appear in his death story. We all have different beliefs and ideas for what we are suppose to do in life. But, nobody really knows the answer to that question. Boland wants man to live his life like a story and do not worry about what other men say about it (Greening, 2008, p.407). Do not worry about what other men hate about it. A story is not suppose to be about what the audience wants to hear in the story. An interesting story is a story that you want to tell and only a few people want to read it (Greening, 2008, p.407). A man’s purpose in life is to write a story in his own way.
In my personal opinion, I agree with Boland’s view of human existence. A man should write his own story. Everything changes fast. The clothes you wear and ideas that people consider normal change. It is hard to keep up with the world that changes quickly. There will come a time when you pull the plug and run your own race. You will get tired of running the “world race.” You will realize that these ideas are not what you want to live by. You will realize that these lifestyles are the not the lifestyles you want to be known by. These actions are the not the actions you want to perform. There will be many people who will hate you, but at least when you tell the story of your life and it will be interesting. Boland believes that the purpose of human existence it to live your live like a book you wrote and I agree with that concept.
Human existence according to William Wordsworth means to realize that Earth has nothing to show you and you need to take action (Nichols, 2016, p.100). He doesn’t mean that earth does not have pretty things to show you. He suggests that the world tries to give you this fake reality of what life looks like to be successful (Nichols, 2016, p.100). The true reality that Wordsworth mentions in “Beyond Romantic Ecocriticism” is taking action for action is the purpose of humans (Nichols, 2016, p.100). Wordsworth writes (2016), “Earth has nothing to shew more fair: Dull would be of soul who could pass by a sight so touching in its majesty (p.100).” Wordsworth mentions the word “shew” to represent the fake reality that the world shows you to be happy (Nichols, 2016, p.100). The real reality is the reality you see with action for action. The reality you see once you choose to imagine or choose to take physical action. The reality that you see with your mind or physical self is connected to action. Wordsworth often wrote about being one with nature and realizing that your mind can go further then your body. Wordsworth is trying to infer that you don’t need material things to make you happy. What you need is to take some action and open your mind. You eyes are the only thing that move when you move from one point to another. But, your mind can move anywhere and at any point in time. Your mind is an infinite bubble visions locked in a box (Nichols, 2016, p.100). You can see them anytime you want. The concept of human existence from Wordsworth is a little out of the box. In general from Wordsworth perspective, the concept of human existence is to take action for action (Nichols, 2016, p.100). Your mind can see anything so just take action to know that you can do it (Nichols, 2016, p.100).
Victorian writer Kipling think man’s existence depends on what the Christian God has to say (Lackey, 2007, p.17). Kipling wrote a poem called “The Mary Gloster” which tells the life of man who is fed up with following the rules in the bible (Lackey, 2007, p.17). The main character was married to a woman who wasn’t a good wife (Lackey, 2007, p.17). He decide to kill her to free himself from marriage slavery. The main character did what God said and he wasn’t rewarded in full. He felt that God gave him half of what he expected in marriage  (Lackey, 2007, p.17). The character decided to only follow the rules he liked (Lackey, 2007, p.17). Kipling writes (2007), “I believe in the resurrection, if I read my bible plain (pg.17).” Kipling writes “If I read my bible plain” to indicate that man can find purpose in life if he looks at the bible and follow what rules he wants (Lackey, 2007, p.17). In life, there will be times when the “right thing” is not the pleasurable thing. Life won’t always give you what you want for doing what you need to do. Sometimes, rules need to be broken to achieve what you really want (Lackey, 2007, p.17). A person that follows the bible completely will find themselves in a lot of messed up situations. Life doesn’t always go by the book. Kipling wants man to understand that existing in the world does not mean you have to always do what you are told or follow all the rules (Lackey, 2007, p.17). The rules can prevent you from being happy. Kipling believes that a man should only follow the rules that he or she likes in life. A man should not follow everything to the letter and end up becoming a miserable individual in the end (Lackey, 2007, p.17).
In my own personal opinion, following the book does not always get what you want in life. We all want to exist in life. But, there comes a time when we need to realize that existing is connected to action. It is not connected to material objects. Some people get caught up into thinking that obtaining material objects will give them happiness. Happiness can only be obtained from action. It doesn’t really matter what you get from performing a particular action. You have to connect your happiness to the actions that you performs. It is nice to have material things to remind your self of how much money you make. But, money does not change what you did in life or what you tried to do.
Philip Larkin, A Victorian writer, wrote a poem called “A Nocturnal” because he believed that men exist because they are suppose to do loving things to bring the world back to life (Gudas, 2015, p.91). Larkin writes (2015), “For I am every dead thing, In whom Love wrought alchemy (p.91).” Love is the key to making live seem more enjoyable (Gudas, 2015, p.91). From the moment you step foot on earth, you feel that it is already dead. You see people turning on each other. Nobody cares about someone’s future unless money is involved. It feels like it is dead already. As a result, someone needs to fill the love meter in the world in order to keep earth alive. The existence of man from Larkin’s perspective is to fill the world with love (Gudas, 2015, p.91). Love keeps the world alive and stops people from hurting each other. The world is full of so much suffering. Somebody has to step in and be the guy to bring the world back to life with love (Gudas, 2015, p.91).
The existence of humans will remain a mystery to those who don’t believe in something. Wordsworth believed that humans are meant to enjoy what is shown in front of them and change their minds to become a better person. George Gordon believed that humans exist to experience love before their time is up. The days have nights and they must be enjoyed to remind us of being human. Kipling disagrees with humans existing to just enjoy life. He believes humans exist to work and obtain resources. The resources give humans power which keep them alive. Kipling also believes humans are suppose to follow some rules that God gives them to follow. He suggests that humans can’t follow all the rules because the world is unfair. It does not give you what you want for doing what is needed all the time. Larkin believed that humans exist to bring life to the planet. The planet is dead and it needs humans to bring it back to life with acts of love. Gunn believed that humans exist to find a place where they can avoid people. A man can have have peace if he is put in a box where his enemies can not get him. Boland believed that living your life like a book is the meaning of being human. All the writers have a common belief between doing what the world expects you to do or doing what you believe you should do. There does come a point when you realize when the world is not acting in a way where you can just agree with it. If you want to exist in this world, you are going to have to make a choice between your individual beliefs or nothing.  The actions you commit in life last for eternity. The material objects you have in life will only last for a short moment. Time wise, enjoying your own life will outweigh any material object that you will have in your entire life. You want to exist in life and if you want to exist in life then you got to follow your own beliefs. The world is not always going to tell you what you need to hear. Take the Romantic writers’ advice and enjoy what time you have left on this planet because science builds things. It doesn’t tell you why you should be alive. Live for your beliefs of what it means to be alive or die for something you do not care about. Make your choice.

Two Words I Want to Know:
1. Common use word:
-God, stands for a high power and goodness of the world.
2. Word I’m interested in:
-Death, means the end of everything or the cause of death.

God and death are two words that humans give meanings that make little sense. The Christian religion persuaded people to believe in God in order to be good. But, what if God is a hypocrite? Death is told by scientist to mean the end of life, but what if death is just a step in life. How do scientist know the meaning of death if they have never visited death? Over the years, the meanings of word God and death changes. The historical and social influences of the world causes words to mean different things over time.
According to the ancient Hebrew text, God is defined as the good creator of all things. God is divine and wants to be consider a father to all things living on earth (Meyer, 2016, p.3). God is a super natural being that promise deliverance and good things to people who believe in God (Meyer, 2016, p.3). God wants you to pray to him when you are in need or want guidance. God is good and God teaches man to be good. God expects people to love their families because God takes care of people. God generally means good supreme being.
The social influences of the word “God” indicate that God is a hypocrite. God is suppose to make the world fair for everybody living in it. But, God does not make it fair for everyone living in it. There will come a time when someone might assume that God does not exist. Unfair social situations would make someone assume that “God” is a metaphor and not a real person. God stands for something that takes care of people (Meyer, 2016, p.3). But, God does not take care of the world because is filled with chaos. Anyone who turns on the news would see hypocrites left and right. They would see people being humiliated or people being mistreated for no reason. Is there a God who is good? Maybe there is a God is who is good. But, there is no God who manages the evil things going on in the world. The Christian God only exist in a metaphor sense. The word “God” comes from a group of people who want to believe that there is a good being who makes the world a better place.
What is death? Death according to Old English, is the person or thing that cause death (Harper, 2001-2017). Death is a ghost or spirit that you see when your about to die. According to general science, death is the end of life or existence. Death can be sudden and is not something that is planned (Ekore, 2016, p.370). Death is something that people cry over. Death is the point when you realize you need to preform some unfinished business. Death is the end to some that have faith in nothing. Religion provides death answers to that humans have before death (Ekore, 2016, p.370). However, religion is not guaranteed to tell the truth about death. The truth about death depends on what someone chooses to believe.
According to African cultures, death is a path to the next world (Ekore, 2016, p.370). The next world is called “Spiritual World.” The spiritual world will provide you with a new body. However, if an individual did not live an interesting life, then the individual will not be given a new body (Ekore, 2016, p.370). The person must also receive a proper burial or they might become a wandering ghost in the real world. The proper burial that a person is buried in will provide a safe passage to the next life. The end of life goal for an individual should be to become an ancestor according to some African cultures (Ekore, 2016, p.370).
Death is a mystery and it means something to everyone’s life. Death is the end of everything you see with your eyes. Death is the end of living on one plane of existence. Death is the end of relationships and accomplishments. Death is the end of thinking. Death is the end of dreams or trying to accomplish dreams. Death is end of what life could have been. Death is end of a friend you care about.
What controls death? People do not die for no reason. There has to be a spirit or being that causes death. The Grim Reaper is an old folk tale that claims to represent a spirit that see you when your about to die. The reaper is a empty skeleton that you see on the day you die. There are European rumors that suggest that you can make a deal with the reaper to live a little longer. We do not know why people die because we do not know what causes humans to die randomly. We come up with theories, but we do not know why. Death is a mystery.
God and death are words that was brought into the English language to describe something important about humans. God was brought in to tell humans how to be good. There is no one managing the world. So, God would be something that exist in a “metaphor” sense. God teaches good morals that would make a man good. But, he doesn't manage the world right. The word death was brought in to describe the point where life ends and the point when you need to perform your last wishes. Death is caused by something because death can be random. Death is not something that is planned in someone’s life. The randomness of death can mean that the life is not about being the best. Life is about enjoying the day. The meanings of these two words are important. God and death signifies that someone teaches us good and someone kills us in this life. We humans do not understand why. But, we do need teachers of different type of jobs to help make the world balanced. Maybe that is the purpose of adding God and death to the English language.
