Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a representation of the choices of free will. We each have a choice in free will. At least, we think we have a choice in freewill. What if those choices that we take are a result of the people we meet? Shakespeare’s Macbeth might be the answer to that question. There are three sisters who play a role on Macbeth’s decisions that he makes in life. These three sisters are persuasive and try to distort Macbeth’s decisions. Decisions made to lead him into power. Some of the choices we make might be a indirect result of someone else. We all think that all choices are our own, but are they really?
In the story, the three sisters are witches which contain persuasive abilities (Minns). These witches possess the power to see the future and influence decision making (Minns). This means that the witches have tongues that can cause someone to act or not act on something. They can tell prophesies that change the fate of someone’s life. In the story, they would use their indirect techniques to convince people that what they want them to have is what they really want to have. They use mind techniques to persuade people to follow a path that they do not want.
Macbeth, a noble man, was influenced by the three witches (Minns). Macbeth listened to the words of the witches. Similar to a man listening to a friend or a stranger with knowledge. He listened and an idea was formed in his head. An idea that made him “think” that he was suppose to be the king (Minns). The witches used false stories to manipulate Macbeth’s brain into believing something that wasn’t true. Before Macbeth met the witches, he wanted nothing to do with power. Sometimes, we get caught up into more power instead of more fulfillment. It is easy for us to lust for power and linger on to something that provides false fulfillment.
Macbeth and his wife talked about killing the king of Glamis in order to make Macbeth king (Minns). Once Macbeth accomplish this goal, he felt secure for a period (Noone). He goes off to see the witches again and they show him another vision (Noone). A vision that convinces him that something is wrong. After some time, Macbeth decides to kill the Macduff family in order to secure his place at the throne (Noone). He kills to get in power and he kills to stay in power. A result of the three witches mind manipulation and Macbeth’s gullible mind. He doesn’t realize that he never wanted to be king in the first place.
Shakespeare was trying to reflect on the decisions that people make in life. Some of these decisions can be caused by indirect methods (Noone). Destructive indirect methods of talking or visions. Talking methods to convince people to do things they do not want to do. Slowly forcing people into doing things not planned. The witches did not tell Macbeth directly to become the king. They persuaded his mind with false charades to turn him into a murderer. Macbeth was a noble man who lived a simple life. But one day, he ran into the wrong people and decided to go against what he wanted in life.
Shakespeare wanted to explain the meaning of our decisions in a complex method. He told a story to tell the hidden meaning of decisions. The three witches did not know the fate of Macbeth (Noone). They pretended to know the true fate to convince Macbeth to follow the deeds and perform the actions intended. We all fall into this indirect mind trap. This game where we have to do it or else. There is no or else. But, we keep telling ourselves that if we don’t do it then there is going to be bad consequences. Sometimes, the assumptions of bad consequences for our decisions are fake. Not every decision has a bad outcome that relates to each decision a human make.
Shakespeare wanted to paint a picture to people that some people want to only have power over others. That is their main objective for telling advice. They do not want to guide someone in the right path. They just want to control their decisions and their choices in life. You have a right to decide on anything. You must not let anything stop you from agreeing to decide on something. Advice is not always advice. Sometimes, it the indirect manipulation of your future decisions. Shakespeare’s overall vision was to let people decide their own fate and not advice.
